What Does It Mean To Believe?

There was a time in my life when I did not know whether I was saved or whether I was lost. I remember working for the Massey-Harris Company in Toronto, and carrying messages from one department to another. As I walked along the underground corridors of that great firm I was not interested in the message I was carrying. I was asking myself just one question: "Am I saved or am I lost? If I am lost, Lord, let me know it in order that I may get saved, and if I am saved let me know it in order that I may rejoice in Thy Salvation."

Ignite Your Passion For The Lost

The Apostle Paul wished he could give up his own eternal life to save his countrymen (Ro. 9:1–4). Charles Finney wept at the thought of people facing a Christless eternity. A. B. Simpson agonized in prayer over the nations where Jesus Christ was not exalted. Hudson Taylor's nightmare featured millions tumbling into the chasm of hell. When we think about these people, we are put to shame. Few of us today come close to having a passion for souls like these men. But can "a heart for the lost" be developed?

Admittedly we have sinned, but how serious is our sin? If we break human laws, that has certain consequences. What about God's law? The Bible says, "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). This is speaking of spiritual death. If physical death is separation of the soul from the body, spiritual death would be separation of the soul from God, a separation that carries with it fearful consequences. This is a huge problem for us. Once separated, how do we get back to God?
